Rabies - vaccination
Rabies is an acute viral encephalomyelitis caused by members of the Lyssavirus genus. It is transmitted to humans, usually by a bite or scratch from an infected animal. On rare occasions, transmission of the virus has occurred through body fluids from an infectious animal coming into contact with an individual's mucous membranes. The virus attacks the central nervous system, causing progressive damage to the brain and spinal cord. Once symptoms are present, rabies is almost always fatal. Individuals of any age are required to receive a full course (3 doses) of the rabies vaccine. The cost is £96 per dose. Please ask the pharmacist for more information.
